Scented Makeup: What is all the Fuss About?
When we first got into the colorful world of makeup, everything sort of smelled like cheap plastic. But as we grew into our palettes and lipsticks, things got a bit more sophisticated. Products would have a perfume scent and we have been used to lip products smelling like vanilla or cupcake. There is nothing too surprising there, but the scented makeup world is amping up its game and winning by a landslide.
I’m not talking about the delicious Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers or Watermelon scented clear sticky glosses from Bonne Bell, but rather all the eyeshadows, blushes, and even mascaras featuring fruity or even sweet chocolate scents.
Most of us are familiar with the Too Faced bestseller: Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, a matte contour shade that has the subtle scent of powdered hot chocolate. But a few years ago, Too Faced expanded that line with the Chocolate Bar palette, then the Semi Sweet Chocolate, and the White Chocolate Bar. And it hasn’t stopped. Too Faced has filled the market with their scented makeup. They have even released a Peanut Butter and Honey Palette, a Peanut Butter and Jelly Palette, and of course the Sweet Peach Palette that inspired their entire Peaches and Cream collection.

And the market is going nuts over it. It is no longer enough for a palette to have a variety of pigmented shades that are easily blendable, they now have to have a scent that makes your mouth water. And this collection includes everything from a primer and foundation to blush, bronzer, and lip products.
And although Too Faced may have been the frontrunner in the scented makeup niche, the drugstore market is catching on. This season COVERGIRL, L’Oreal, and Maybelline have all released their own versions of colorful scented makeup, and it doesn’t seem like this trend will be slowing down anytime soon.

From L’Oreal, we have seen Life’s a Peach Blushes that have a subtle sweet peach scent. They have also launched the Cherry My Cherri Eyeshadow Palette featuring soft warm tones that smell like sweet sun fruits, plus the bolder Berry Much Love Eyeshadow Palette and the Paradise Enchanted, a fruit-scented. Not to mention the decadent Les Chocolats Ultra Matte Liquid lipsticks that come in 12 shades and have a sweet cocoa scent. These have not only added to the affordable and adorable makeup options at the drugstore, but have snagged quite an audience. You can find hundreds of tutorials and first impressions online of beauty gurus sniffing their eyeshadows and asking their partners if they can smell chocolate on their lips. Even better, these products are actually well made, not just well scented.

A few months back, Maybelline launched their Total Temptation line that featured a mascara, a brow pencil, and a shimmery eye palette. And to ease their customers into the world of scented makeup, that Total Temptation Mascara had a coconut scent! I mean I am not sure whether scent matters here, but am guilty of buying it. And to be honest, it is fabulous with or without the fragrance. Now the coconut smell is super delicate, and if you are a coconut lover, this is a great addition to your makeup collection, not only the mascara works wonders on your lashes, but you'll make a trip to Tahiti with each use.
Then to carry on with their scented products, Maybelline launched their Lemonade Craze Eyeshadow Palette that we spoke about in our Color Trend post. This palette is full of fun champagne shades and even has a bright yellow and bright pink thrown in. It contains a citrus scent and is to be followed by the Soda Pop Eyeshadow Palette, coming soon. This has both vibrant and deeper shades that are named after fizzy drinks, and I assume it will follow suit and feature a soda scent.

And the newest to the scented makeup bunch is COVERGIRL at Walmart. They have the cocoa-scented TruNaked Chocoholic palette, which will feature an exclusive bronzer and contour kit as well. And then there is the more pastel palette called TruNaked Peach Punch that will have a corresponding highlighter and blush. This is probably the least exciting of all the scent launches in my book. They really aren’t doing anything new and exciting by using chocolate and peach as their scents, and to be honest, the colors in these palettes are not wowing.
Hopefully this is just the beginning and a lot more brands will join the bandwagon and release other scents like basil, coffee, or even strawberry and watermelon. Okay now I’m just making myself hungry, but be your own judge. Which of these scented makeup goodies is going in your shopping cart? What scents do you think should join the trend? Or do you think scented makeup is totally overrated and juvenile? I think it is fun to have fun with makeup, so I am totally on board and can’t wait to see what else joins the scented makeup market.
